The original title of my article was "Higher education: The things we do and fail to do". The editors changed it to "Preparing good citizens and workers means treating students as adults", which is lame.
I am a zoologist by training. I write about science, education, and citizenship. I write to make sense of reality. I teach ecology and evolution at a fourth-rate university in Vancouver. I wish I could say that I contribute to a larger discussion. I don't. My impact on other people's minds is zero. But that is true for almost all of us.
